Where's Jimbo?
Inside Liberty Watch Today - Jan. 25, 2006
The first real debate between the candidates for Nevada Governor took place Monday night in Las Vegas - a debate sponsored by the Nevada State Education Association, better known as the teachers union.
Four candidates for governor turned out. Even though the date and time had been set for over a month, one candidate couldn't make it - annointee Jim Gibbons.
Gibbons gave a lame alibi to Channel 8 News saying that he was the only candidate to miss last night's debate because (ahem), he was hosting the Congressional Homeland Security Committee at the Nevada Test Site instead. Yeah, that's the ticket. "I was at a Homeland Security Meeting."
Was the Congressman lying? Was he afraid to show up and talk real issues about Nevada's public schools? Is he afraid of Bob Beers, Dina Titus, Lori Hunt or the other guy? Again, we're talking about Jim Gibbons here, so, I think we should allow him the benefit of doubt.
I want to make sure that Jimmy's opponents don't go after him unfairly, so I'm on the job. I called the Test Site and they didn't know what I was talking about. No meeting here, but then I dug further. I went to the official website of Congress' Homeland Security Committee, but alas to my chagrin, no meetings were scheduled. Check for yourself http://hsc.house.gov/schedule.cfm
Then I said to myself, there had to be a meeting. Congressman Gibbons wouldn't lie, would he? So I went to the website for Committee Chairman Congressman Pete King and again nothing about any meeting.
But the detective in me said there had to be a meeting. So, off to committee vice-chair Curt Weldon's website. Again, nothing about any meeting. http://www.curtweldon.org/news.htm
Then it dawned on me that I should check the congressman's website, and guess what: Nothing there about any meeting. http://www.gibbonsfornevada.com/InTheNews.htm
The only thing I could come up with was maybe it was a super duper top secret meeting. Yeah, that's the ticket! Super Duper top secret. Of course, within a few minutes of reading this, Gibbons will get something up on his own website to corroborate his alibi of not showing up to the debate.
