Si...The American Voter Is Pissed Off

One of the more popular rallying cries during the recent spate of media induced pro illegal immigration rallies has been Sí, se puede, which, properly translated means "it can be done" even though the organizers would have you believe it means "yes, we can."
Well, as Frank Sinatra once said to Sammy Davis, Jr. in a comedy sketch, "No you can't." Because it appears that what the folks who are doing the protesting really want is a free pass. And, judging from a long stream of public opinion polls starting in the early 90s and continuing through this week, about 70 per cent of the people who count in this country-those who pay taxes and have the right to vote-are against anything which even looks like a free pass.
Politicians-particularly Democrats-are speaking from both sides of their collective mouths. On one hand they decry illegal immigration. And on the other, they don't really want to do anything about it because they sense a weakness on the part of the Republicans who also have a hard time stopping warm gas from escaping from both sides of their mouths as well.
Well, here are what appear to be the facts from our weekend of talking to just about everybody we could talk with out here in flyover country.
The American people are pissed off. At least those of us who live in real places, not New York and Washington. They are pissed off at the media which is treating this issue like it treated the civil rights issue in the 60s as opposed to what it really is-a bunch of folks who don't want to play by the rules.
They are pissed off at the people they elected for not paying attention to what about 70 per cent of them want. And they are pissed off at the concept that someone can sneak into this country and then demand full citizenship irrespective of what the law actually says.
And if the organizers of these rallies and boycotts keep it up, the number will rise from 70 per cent to 90 percent and their friends in Congress will, we can assure you, get the message.
The bottom line is that the result will not be pretty.
If these folks really want a piece of the American dream-as opposed to a piece of the American economic system-then they better pay attention to their friends and family members who are here legally. The first thing they need to do is understand that nobody in this country can be a naturalized citizen unless they learn about our history and learn to speak English at a minimum of an eighth grade level. Based on that 70 per cent number, we doubt this will change for them.
The next thing that they need to understand is that this nation will give you almost anything, but you cannot demand it because we don't owe it to you. And, finally, they need to understand that everybody in this nation has human rights. But citizens here have civil rights and that is a status you earn if you come here from somewhere else. You cannot simply demand citizenship with all the rights and benefits it confers on an individual.
That's not the way things work here and, again, we imagine once someone reads that 70 per cent number to our elected officials, they'll get the message quickly. If you want to chant that it can be done, you better think carefully about exactly what you think you want. Because if you keep demanding what 70 per cent of the voters don't want, that number may rise to 90 per cent and you'll be chanting Sí, se puede on your way back across the border.
We hope somebody will translate this into Spanish for those of you who do not want to learn English.

The Rumor Mill
Rumor has it that a group of Northern construction developers are trying to convince a long time southern Nevada community activist to file against Valerie Weber in her Republican primary. It seems that they are angry over Valerie recruiting her brother Mike Weber to run against longtime popular legislator John Marvel. Wow, it sure looks like Valerie has no respect for that unwritten rule of colleagues supporting each other in their re-elections.
One of the developers was quoted as saying "Our concern is not with Valerie. She's a harmless airhead. But, if her brother is elected, she'll become his vote, and Mike Weber will be no friend to business. He's a loose cannon and that will be dangerous."
You might remember that Valerie Weber is the legislator that tried to get Republican candidates to hire her consultant Democrat Billy Roger's to run their races, making them feel that if they didn't use Rogers they wouldn't get the support of the Assembly Caucus. When I had the audacity to point out that Valerie was trying to convince Republicans to hire a Democrat to run our races I was chastised. I was told to leave Val alone, and she had no choice but to hire Billy Rogers…why? Because "We" Republicans don't have any talented grassroots consultants. Yea, that's big load of crap. Let's see….we have Mike Slanker, Ryan Erwin, Chris Carr, Nathan Emens, Sonny Minx, Rachel Dahl, and that's just off the top of my head. Heck…even Dan Burdish would be better than a Democrat.
Now Valerie is at it again. She's recruited her brother Mike Weber to run against her colleague John Marvel. Wow! The other members of the Republican Caucus must be feeling good about Valerie now. It's not like the Assembly caucus doesn't have enough problems. And now they have to deal with this selfish family agenda. I do have a thought; Val, why don't you ask your brother to run against Sheila Leslie, where we don't have a candidate, or better yet if it's so important that you elect your brother, let him move into your house and run in your place. At least we would have someone with half a brain serving in Carson City. How's that for an idea? You let me know.
Yep, everyone you can't fix stupid, I'm just glad we someone with Val's insight and leadership abilities inside the caucus. Now I'll just wait for the emails defending Valerie.
