Gibbons struggles to take a stand on the issues
BY GEORGE HARRIS
Like state Sen. Bob Beers, Nevada's best candidate for governor, I am exasperated by Jim Gibbons' chronic state of undecided. In November, he insulted Nevada voters with his efforts in Congress to reduce the federal budget deficit by $51 billion in order to make up a small part of the cost of preparing New Orleans for the next hurricane. On Jon Ralston's Face-To-Face, even Ralston couldn't pin the congressman to an opinion.
"I think Gibbons' non-answers were cop-outs or waffling," Beers said.
Precisely.
Gibbons is undecided about the Tax and Spending Control (TASC), while Beers has promised to veto the legislature's budget if it grows by more than population growth plus inflation. Gibbons also had "no comment" about Beers' call for a temporary suspension in the Nevada gas tax when gas prices surged following Hurricane Katrina. He had no comment and said he needed further information about Beers' idea to lower the DMV car tax permanently.
And most recently, he hasn't decided about an effort to reduce the size of the federal budget - a budget we all know is bloatedwith waste and pork.
Leadership requires people to make bold stands. It's past time for Gibbons to join this debate. This campaign of ideas is about offering solutions - and sometimes hard choices - to remove waste and slow uncontrolled government growth.
Beers runs a campaign of ideas, and is, by far, the candidate who will offer creative and workable solutions to slow the uncontrolled growth of government and return hard-earned tax dollars to Nevada's families.
Like I've said before, vote responsibly and vote for Beers; his vision is not only cool, it's refreshing. LW
