Until I’m satisfied Huckabee is not a liberal Christian, I won’t jump on the prayer wagon

As of this writing, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has won the Iowa Republican caucus. His rise from second tier candidate to frontrunner has been nothing less than miraculous, and I only wish I could be more excited about it. When he first announced his candidacy, and had a few good answers on debates, he got my attention. I was encouraged that a former Baptist minister, who seemed to have admirable family values, would even dare to brave the shark infested waters of politics.
Realizing that a second tier candidate gets very few chances to make an impression in a televised debate, he prepared a couple of funny lines and delivered them on cue, fully aware of the mileage he’d get. More and more people took notice, especially in the mainstream media. Once again, I was encouraged. Then I started to take a closer look at Gov. Huckabee, and I was discouraged.
Information came out about tax increases under his watch. He granted clemency to hundreds of serious criminals in Arkansas and supported in-state tuition for illegal immigrant children who had graduated from Arkansas high schools. And just when I thought we could actually have a conservative Christian candidate win an election!
Once all this additional information came out, I became suspicious. Why would the primarily left-leaning, mainstream media fawn over a Baptist minister? The more they found out about the Governor, the more they liked him. Why, he could be the perfect candidate! The Christian right would be blinded by his spiritual pedigree, and ask no questions. For the left, a President Huckabee could be quite acceptable, even if he were a Christian, because he wasn’t that kind of Christian. He wouldn’t rock the liberal boat too much by opposing taxes or wanting to tighten the borders. After all, we have to show compassion. What would Jesus do?
As a Christian, I can tell you that people like Mike Huckabee scare me more than atheists in some ways. When an atheist has a point of view, it may or may not be based on principle, but it’s not based on his interpretation of scripture, or what a higher authority would do.
Although the Bible tells us that God controls the universe (so it’s therefore arrogant to believe man has the power to destroy it), there are Christians who sincerely believe global warming is a major threat.
While the Tower of Babel demonstrates that God wants us to have defined nations and languages, there are still many believers who consider border control to be inhumane.
The worst part is, they sincerely believe they’re exercising God’s will.
I can’t see into Gov. Huckabee’s heart, but until I’m satisfied that he’s not a Christian of the liberal persuasion, I won’t jump on the prayer wagon. A liberal in clergy clothing is still a liberal.
